Nepal's seasons explained

• Pre-monsoon (March to May). Hot and increasingly humid, with afternoon thunderstorms building through May. Temperatures in the Terai can exceed 40°C while the hills stay pleasant.
• Monsoon (June to September). The bulk of Nepal's annual rainfall. Expect heavy, often nightly downpours and a real risk of landslides and road closures. Carry an umbrella everywhere.
• Post-monsoon (October to November). The clearest skies of the year. This is the classic trekking window and why Dashain and Tihar fall in such reliably good weather. Daytime temperatures are warm and nights are cool.
• Winter (December to February). Dry and cold, with dense morning fog in the Terai that regularly disrupts flights and highway traffic. Kathmandu mornings can dip to 2°C while afternoons reach 18°C.

How to read the Nepal weather forecast

The daily high and low are model estimates for the city centre. In hill towns the temperature can drop sharply within a short distance uphill. In the Kathmandu valley winter mornings are often several degrees colder than the daytime figure suggests. The feels-like temperature accounts for wind chill and humidity, giving you a more realistic sense of what it actually feels like outside. The 5-day forecast is pulled from Open-Meteo, which aggregates national meteorological model data from multiple sources.

Weather in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Biratnagar, Butwal, and Nepalgunj

Kathmandu (1,400 m) has a mild subtropic climate with distinct seasons. Summers are warm with monsoon rains; winters are dry with cold mornings. Pokhara (820 m) is wetter than Kathmandu thanks to its position at the foot of the Annapurna range. Biratnagar (80 m) in the eastern Terai is hot and humid for most of the year. Butwal (150 m) sits in the inner Terai with a climate similar to Biratnagar but slightly moderated by nearby hills. Nepalgunj (150 m) in the western Terai is one of Nepal's hottest cities, regularly exceeding 40°C in the pre-monsoon months.
