Why BS month lengths change every year

Unlike Gregorian months which have fixed lengths, BS months are determined by astronomical observation. Each month starts on the new moon, so month lengths vary from 29 to 32 days depending on lunar cycles. The pattern differs from year to year, which is why converting requires a lookup table rather than simple arithmetic. The Nepal Calendar Determination Committee maintains the official BS calendar each year.
